What is Paper Quilling?
Paper quilling (also called paper filigree) is a paper art where you roll thin paper strips into coils and pinch them into different shapes. Those shapes are then put together to form all sorts of designs from flowers, snowflakes and animals to mosaics and other creative patterns. Paper quilling is often used in scrap booking, card making and framing pictures or wedding invitations. Click the following link to learn more about the history of quilling.
How long has Quilled Creations been in business?
Quilled Creations was started by Alli and Dave Bartkowski in 2002. It was a hobby of Alli's that we turned into a business. Now we are blessed to be able to work together everyday and sell quilling supplies and kits all over the world. We are located in a suburb of Rochester, NY.
What is the best way to get started in paper quilling?
If you are just getting started and don't have any supplies, the best thing to purchase is our Quilling Beginner Kit. The instructions are very easy to follow and will teach you all the basics. Alli Bartkowski has also written a great book that every beginner should own. Paper Quilling for the First Time shows you all the basics of quilling as well as many advanced techniques. We also have a great selection of free quilling videos that teach you this wonderful craft.
What tools do I need to get started in paper quilling?
The main tool most beginners start with is the Slotted Quilling Tool. It is also a good idea to use a Circle Sizer Ruler or Cirlce Template Board so that your coils are a consistent size. You will also need craft glue.
What is the best glue for paper quilling?
When you are looking for the best glue for paper quilling, there are several things that need to be considered. For quilling you want a water based glue that is not too tacky or sticky. You want a glue that will dry quickly and dry clear. We highly recommend and sell Elmers Craft Bond Glue. We believe that this is the best glue for paper quilling because it dries quickly, doesn't stick to your fingers, doesn't discolor the paper and it dries clear.
What is the most popular paper size for quilling?
Most paper quilling is done with the 1/8" (3mm) wide quilling paper. The 1/4" and 3/8" papers are used for miniatures, folded roses and fringed flowers.
What type of paper is used for paper quilling?
Paper quilling is done with text weight paper, which is heavier than printer paper but much lighter than card stock. Cardstock does not work well for quilling since it tends to bend instead of roll.
What is the easiest way to store your quilling strips?
Check out Alli's blog entry on the best way to store your quilling strips.
How come when I take the coil off the slotted tool it doesn't spread open?
It is likely you are rolling the strip too tight. Try to make a looser coil while applying even tension.
How come my coils are not the same size, even though I start with the same length strip?
Be sure to apply even pressure when rolling. Also try using a Circle Sizer Ruler or Cirlce Template Board to make sure your coils all come out the same.
Do you sell a Quilling Fringer?
We currently do not sell a Fringer. We have not found one that lives up to our quality standards and therefore do not sell it. We do offer a fringed mum quilling die that can be used to create fringed flowers. You can find information on this with a video on how it work here.
